What is a GVM Upgrade and do I need one for my 4WD?

Alright, let's break it down in true BAW style. Picture this: you've got your 4WD loaded up with all the bells and whistles – we're talking bull bars, winches, a swag big enough for a small army, and maybe even your mother-in-law. Suddenly, you're teetering close to your ride's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) – that's the maximum legal weight your 4WD can be, including all its gear, fuel, and the blokes inside.

Here's where GVM upgrades come into play. They're not just a fancy addition; they're crucial for keeping your 4WD safe and legal when you're loaded up for an epic adventure. Without it, you're like a kangaroo on ice – not really stable and probably breaking a few laws.

Our GVM upgrades are like giving spinach to Popeye. They beef up your 4WD's load-carrying capacity, improve towing stability, and ensure you handle like a dream, even when you're packed to the rafters. It's all about staying within the legal road limits and not playing chicken with the scales. Bottom line: If your 4WD is kitted out and carrying more than just a few tinnies and a fishing rod, a GVM upgrade is your ticket to a safe, legal, and worry-free off-road experience. And at BAW, we've got the goods to get you there – fully tested and certified for peace of mind. So, let's get that 4WD beefed up and ready to roll!

What's the difference between pre-rego and post-rego GVM upgrades?

Pre-rego GVM upgrades: These upgrades are done before your vehicle is even registered, giving them a golden stamp of federal approval as a Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM). This means they're recognized across all states and territories in Australia, making it a breeze if you ever decide to sell your rig.

Post-rego GVM upgrades: Picture this - your trusty 4x4 is already out on the streets when you decide it's time for a GVM upgrade. No worries, mate! You can still make it happen with a post-rego upgrade. However, here's the deal – unlike pre-rego upgrades, post-rego GVM upgrades aren't federally approved. But don't sweat it! Your vehicle remains legal to drive and enjoy interstate, across Australia. It's still ready for those epic road trips. However, when it's time to sell your 4x4, there are some extra steps to take. Your vehicle will need to undergo inspection and re-engineering in the state it's being sold to, if it's outside of the state it was initially engineered in.

In summary, pre-rego upgrades offer nationwide peace of mind. Post-rego upgrades may involve more effort at the time of sale (when selling interstate). Both allow you to hit the road safely and enjoy everything this country has to offer.

Do I get a lift with my GVM upgrade?

Yes. Most GVM upgrades typically provides a suspension lift ranging between 50mm and 100mm above the standard height – and it varies depending on the model of your vehicle.

What suspension brands do we stock?

We stock a range of trusted suspension  brands, including: Superior Engineering, Tough Dog, Lovells, Dobinsons. Whether you're looking for increased durability, more performance, or more flex our selection of suspension brands has got you covered.

Does a GVM upgrade void your vehicle warranty?

Installing an aftermarket GVM upgrade shouldn't void your vehicle warranty. However, it's essential to note that dealerships typically won't cover aftermarket suspension under warranty; that's handled by the suspension manufacturer themselves.

Does a GVM upgrade affect insurance?

You would need to notify your insurance company you have put an aftermarket suspension package in the vehicle, which legally allows you to carry more payload.

How much does it cost to lift a 4x4?

The cost of lifting a 4x4 can vary depending on factors such as your vehicle model and whether you're opting for a GVM upgrade. At BAW Automotive, we understand that everyone has different needs and budgets. That's why we offer options to suit all budgets. Whether you're looking for a basic lift or a comprehensive GVM upgrade, we've got you covered.

Can I fit larger tires on my 4x4 without lifting it?

We don't recommend it. It's best to opt for a lift if you're considering larger tires.

Do I need to upgrade my brakes after getting a GVM upgrade?

When you opt for a GVM upgrade, it's highly recommended to also upgrade your brakes. Why? Because the increased mass of your vehicle resulting from the upgrade puts more demand on your braking system. Upgrading your brakes ensures that your vehicle can handle the extra weight safely and effectively, giving you peace of mind on and off the road.
