WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRE-REGO AND POST-REGO GVM UPGRADES? Pre-rego GVM upgrades are federally approved Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM) upgrades done before your 4WD is registered. They're valid across all Australian states and make interstate resale easy.
Post-rego GVM upgrades are engineered after registration. They're still legal for use nationwide, but if you sell interstate, you'll need an additional engineering sign-off in the buyer’s state.
In short: pre-rego = easier resale. Post-rego = still legal, just a bit more paperwork later.
DO I GET A LIFT WITH MY GVM UPGRADE? Yes. Most GVM upgrades will lift your 4WD by 50–100mm depending on the vehicle model and kit used. Better clearance and better stance without needing a separate suspension lift.
DO I NEED TO UPGRADE MY BRAKES AFTER A GVM UPGRADE? No, but its highly recommended. More weight means more stopping power is required. A brake upgrades improves how your 4WD stops with the increased weight your carrying or towing.
WHAT IS A GVM UPGRADE AND DO I NEED ONE FOR MY 4WD? GVM stands for Gross Vehicle Mass — the legal maximum your 4WD can weigh when loaded. Accessories, passengers, fuel, gear, and tow ball weight all count.
A GVM upgrade increases your legal payload and improves suspension and braking performance under load. Without one, your rig may be overweight and illegal — especially if you’re towing or touring.
At BAW, we offer certified GVM upgrades for popular models including Toyota LandCruiser/Prado/Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-MAX, RAM, Chevrolet and more.
CAN I INSTALL A DUAL BATTERY SYSTEM FOR MY 4X4? Absolutely. A dual battery setup powers your fridge, camp lighting, and 12V gear without draining your starter battery.
We design and install reliable dual battery systems tailored to your setup — whether it’s a weekend tourer or full-time off-grid build, with trade qualified auto electricians.
DO I NEED A SNORKEL FOR MY 4WD? If you’re heading off-road or anywhere dusty or wet, a snorkel is one of the best insurance mods you can make. We install quality snorkels at our Brisbane workshop. A snorkel raises your engine’s air intake to roof level, protecting your motor from water during river crossings and reducing dust intake on dirt roads.

What's the difference between pre-rego and post-rego GVM upgrades?Pre-rego GVM upgrades: These upgrades are done before your vehicle is even registered, giving them a golden stamp of federal approval as a Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM). This means they're recognised across all states and territories in Australia, making it a breeze if you ever decide to sell your rig. Post-rego GVM upgrades: Picture this - your trusty 4x4 is already out on the streets when you decide it's time for a GVM upgrade. No worries, mate! You can still make it happen with a post-rego upgrade. However, here's the deal – unlike pre-rego upgrades, post-rego GVM upgrades aren't federally approved. But don't sweat it! Your vehicle remains legal to drive and enjoy interstate, across Australia. It's still ready for those epic road trips. However, when it's time to sell your 4x4, there are some extra steps to take. Your vehicle will need to undergo inspection and re-engineering in the state it's being sold to, if it's outside of the state it was initially engineered in. In summary, pre-rego upgrades offer nationwide peace of mind. Post-rego upgrades may involve more effort at the time of sale (when selling interstate). Both allow you to hit the road safely and enjoy everything this country has to offer.

-
What is a GVM Upgrade and do I need one for my 4WD?When your 4WD is loaded with accessories, passengers, fuel, and gear, you can easily exceed your vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) - the legal weight limit for your setup.
