Pre-Rego vs Post-Rego GVM Upgrades Explained
If you've been looking into a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade, you've come across the terms "pre-rego" and "post-rego". The obvious difference is timing. But there's a bigger difference that catches a lot of people out.
Pre-rego GVM upgrades run through a federal approval pathway. Post-rego GVM upgrades run through a state-based one. That matters if you're chasing a GVM upgrade interstate.

WHAT IS A PRE-REGO GVM UPGRADE
A pre-rego GVM upgrade happens before the vehicle is first registered. For an eligible upgrade, we modify the vehicle under a federal Second Stage Manufacturer pathway before it's first registered. The vehicle then enters the system with its upgraded GVM already locked in.
There's no separate Queensland, New South Wales, Victorian or South Australian version of that approval. So you could buy a new vehicle bound for another state and still get an eligible pre-rego GVM upgrade done by us in Queensland. It happens before the vehicle ever hits the road. That's one of the biggest perks of sorting your GVM upgrade before you take delivery.
WHAT IS A POST-REGO GVM UPGRADE
Once a vehicle is registered, the rules change. A post-rego GVM upgrade has to go through the relevant state-based engineering and approval process.
You're no longer modifying a new vehicle under a federal pathway. You're modifying one that's already on the road. That means the state it's registered in now matters. For us, that state is Queensland.

BAW Automotive is a Queensland workshop. Our post-rego GVM upgrades get approved through the Queensland system. Plain and simple: a Queensland-registered vehicle gets Queensland engineering, and that earns a Queensland mod plate.
If your vehicle's already registered interstate, we can't run it through our Queensland post-rego process. That approval won't just carry over on its own. Say your vehicle's registered in South Australia, Tasmania or New South Wales. It needs to meet that state's own post-rego rules, not ours.
That's why we can sometimes help an interstate customer with a pre-rego GVM upgrade on a new vehicle. But we can't do a post-rego GVM upgrade once the vehicle's already registered interstate. Post-rego work isn't "Queensland only" by choice. It's state-based by law.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU MOVE OR SELL YOUR GVM-UPGRADED VEHICLE INTERSTATE
A vehicle modified and approved post-rego in Queensland carries a Queensland approval. Sell or move it interstate, and you can't assume that mod plate carries straight over.
The new state may need to inspect the vehicle and get it re-approved by one of its own qualified engineers. Buy a Queensland-engineered vehicle and want to register it elsewhere? There could be another approval process ahead of you. Worth factoring in before you buy a modified vehicle interstate. Also worth factoring in if you're planning a build that might end up registered elsewhere.
PRE-REGO VS POST-REGO GVM UPGRADES AT A GLANCE

If your vehicle's already registered outside Queensland. We can't provide post-rego engineering for an interstate-registered vehicle. You'll need to chase up the right post-rego pathway wherever your vehicle's registered.
