IS THE RAM 1500 CHASSIS STRONG ENOUGH FOR TOWING IN AUSTRALIA?
The RAM 1500 is rated to tow up to 4.5 tonnes, but long-term towing on rough roads and with heavy ball weight can lead to flex and fatigue. Chassis bracing helps reinforce the vehicle for real-world Australian towing conditions.
WHAT CAUSES CHASSIS FLEX IN A RAM 1500?
Chassis flex is caused by the stress of towing heavy loads, uneven road surfaces, and additional rear weight from canopies or trays. Over time, this movement can lead to cracking around key stress points.

The RAM 1500 DT is rated to tow up to 4.5 tonnes, but you’ll quickly run into limitations with the factory GVM of 3,450kg and GCM of 7,713kg.
The vehicle’s kerb weight is approximately 2,749kg — that’s before passengers, accessories, or gear. Towing 4,500kg means you’ll have a tow ball download of roughly 450kg, which legally comes off your payload. That alone brings your available payload down to just 251kg.
Add a couple of passengers, some fuel, a fridge and a canopy, and you’re already overweight.
This is why GVM upgrades and chassis bracing are critical if you plan to tow near capacity. Bracing reinforces known weak points in the RAM 1500 chassis, helping to prevent flex and cracking under real-world Aussie towing conditions.

DO I NEED TO REMOVE THE TUB AND FUEL TANK TO INSTALL A RAM CHASSIS BRACE?
Yes. To install the chassis brace properly, we remove the tub and fuel tank to access and reinforce the chassis structure.
This is the perfect time to upgrade to a long-range fuel tank if you haven’t already. The V8 engine in the RAM 1500 will use significantly more fuel when towing, so increasing your range while the tank is already out just makes sense.
