Does the RAM 1500 DS Chassis Crack?

Short answer? No. If you've been down the rabbit hole of RAM forums and Facebook groups worrying about chassis cracking, you can relax.

What's Actually Going On

There's been a lot of chatter about chassis cracking on RAM 1500s, and it's a fair thing to be worried about if you're towing often. But the issue people are talking about is specific to the DT-generation RAM 1500, not the DS.

The DS generation RAM 1500 chassis doesn't have the same weak point issue

The DT and the DS are different trucks under the skin, even though they wear the same badge. Different chassis design, different construction. The cracking problems reported on the DT simply haven't shown up on the DS in the same way.

Why the 1500 DT Has Had Chassis Issues

The DT RAM 1500 has had a documented pattern of chassis cracking, particularly around coil towers. It's a known issue in the 4WD industry and something any reputable installer in Brisbane should be upfront about with you.

The DS, being the older and different platform, doesn't share that chassis architecture. So it doesn't share that problem either.

The DT chassis has a documented weak point that can crack and bend under load - it's not a question of if, it's a question of when and how hard you're using the truck.

What This Means for Your DS RAM Chassis

If you're running a DS RAM 1500 and looking at a GVM upgrade, or a touring setup, chassis cracking isn't something you need to lose sleep over. That said, any heavy vehicle benefits from being set up properly, with the right components and correct installation, so it handles the extra load the way it's meant to.
