For over 40 years, the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has been the undisputed king of the rugged 4x4 market in Australia. However, the arrival of the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster has brought some serious competition to the table. When it comes to off-road capability, both vehicles have their strengths. The LandCruiser 70 Series features a part-time four-wheel drive system with lockable front and rear differentials (on certain models). It's suspension setup combines coils at the front and leaf springs at the rear, a classic choice for durability. In contrast, the Grenadier, uses a full-time four-wheel drive system with live axles and coil suspension all around. This setup offers a smooth road-on ride and robust off-road performance. The Grenadier also includes a mechanically lockable centre differential with option to spec lockable front and rear differentials, enhancing its traction on tough terrain.

The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has traditionally relied on it's robust V8 diesel engine, known for it's low-end torque and reliability. However, Toyota is shifting gears with a new 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which brings more power and the option of a factory-fitted automatic transmission. On the flip side, the INEOS Grenadier offers a choice between a petrol and a diesel engine. INEOS utilizes a BMW 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder delivering impressive performance. The diesel variant cranking out 183kW and 550Nm of torque. Giving the Grenadier the edge in torque against the 70 Series.

The 79 Series is available as a cab-chassis, ideal for those who need a customizable workhorse. In contrast, the Grenadier Quartermaster comes with a styleside tub, providing a ready-to-go utility truck with a bit more style. However, exciting news for Aussies—INEOS is bringing the cab-chassis variant of the Grenadier to Australia soon!

One of the key differences is modern creature comforts, the Grenadier leaves the 70 Series in the dust. The Grenadier boasts LED headlights, RECARO seats, off-road and wading modes, Pathfinder off-road navigation, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control (complete with second-row vents in the five-seater), a reversing camera, and tyre pressure monitoring. In contrast, the LandCruiser 70 Series sticks to its old-school roots with a basic screen featuring Bluetooth, manual air conditioning controls, manual mirrors, and rugged, rock-solid plastics. While the LandCruiser's simplicity and durability are legendary, the Grenadier's modern amenities make it a formidable competitor.

The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster and the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series each offer unique benefits for off-road enthusiasts. The Grenadier’s modern features, engine and suspension setup make it a strong competitor, while the LandCruiser’s proven durability and reliability continue to be a favourite for rugged adventures. Both the Grenadier and the LandCruiser promise to deliver excellent off-road performance. The real-world performance of these rigs will be the ultimate test, but rest assured, both are built to tackle Australia’s toughest tracks.
