RAM 1500 Mods You Need for Off-Roading & Towing

When we got our hands on this RAM 1500, we knew it had potential—but we also knew it needed some serious upgrades to handle Aussie conditions. The stock setup might be fine for the average driver, but if you’re towing heavy loads, hitting off-road tracks, or just want a more capable truck, there’s plenty of room for improvement.

So, we gave it the full BAW treatment—fixing known weaknesses, beefing up performance, and making it look as tough as it drives. Here’s how we turned this RAM 1500 into a serious workhorse with head-turning style.

  1. Chassis Bracing: A Necessary RAM 1500 Mod

One of the biggest issues with the RAM 1500 DT is its chassis. These things have a habit of cracking, especially under heavy towing. We saw it firsthand - this particular truck had only 25,000km on the clock and the chassis was already starting to go.

The paperwork says 4.5 tonne towing is fine. Real world experience in the workshop tells a different story. To fix this before it becomes a real problem, we worked with Superior Engineering to develop a chassis brace kit that reinforces the chassis and reduces the flex. If you own a RAM 1500, this is a must-have.

  1. Long Range Fuel Tank

The factory 85 litre tank on the 5.7 litre V8 is fine for city driving, but tow a van or hit remote tracks and you'll be stopping at every servo along the way.

We fixed that with a 190L Brown Davis long-range tank, more than doubling the standard driving range. Whether it's hauling a caravan across the state or getting to remote touring spots where fuel stops are few and far between, this Ram can now go the distance.

  1. Caravan Camera Integration

Tow a van and you lose your rear vision almost entirely. An integrated caravan camera setup plugs straight into the factory Uconnect head unit and fixes that properly.

If your Ram runs Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the camera feed pushes straight over the top of it. Hold down the browse button (or the hang up button on the 1500) and the image pops up on the display. Run a two camera setup on your van and it'll automatically switch to the reverse camera when you select reverse, giving you a wider view of what's happening behind the trailer. It's compatible with Uconnect 4 and up, so check with the team on what head unit you're running before booking it in.

  1. Exhaust Upgrade – Because a V8 Should Sound Like One

The 5.7 litre HEMI V8 is a beast, but the factory exhaust doesn't do it justice. We fixed that with a 3-inch catback system, finished off with black chrome tips. Now it sounds like it should - deep, aggressive, and ready to turn heads.

More grunt, more attitude! The black-tipped 3-inch exhaust not only sounds the part but gives the BAW RAM a meaner look and better performance.

GVM Upgrade - More Payload, Same Towing Capacity

Stock RAM 1500s have decent payload numbers, but once you start loading up with accessories, tools, or touring gear, things get tight fast. To handle serious weight, we fitted a Lovells Platinum kit - figures vary by variant, but on this build it lifted Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and Gross Combined Mass (GCM) substantially without touching the RAM's 4500kg towing capacity.

The rear axle load rating is the number that matters most here. On this build it jumped noticeably once the kit went on. Get on a weighbridge with a van hooked up and loaded for a trip, and rear axle loads climb a lot faster than most owners expect - this isn't just about staying legal, it's about the truck actually handling the load properly.

Wheels & Tyres – Built to Handle Anything

A GVM upgrade isn't just a suspension job. It legally requires load rated rims and tyres to match the new ratings. On this build that meant a set of load rated wheels with load rated all-terrain tyres to suit - not just for looks, but because it's part of what keeps the upgrade compliant.

Strength meets style! These Method 305 HDs, load-rated to 1615kg, got the custom gold treatment—because tough should still look good.

Roller Cover Upgrade – Smarter, More Secure Ute Storage

Factory tonneau covers do the job, but they're far from the best. We swapped the stock cover for the HSP Roll R Cover, a fully retractable tonneau system with one of the smallest canisters on the market, maximising every inch of tub space.

It's fully retractable for smooth, hassle-free access to your gear, comes with a full-width LED light for night visibility. Did we mention it integrates seamlessly with HSP load bars and Yakima platforms? More storage, better protection, and smarter functionality—all in one sleek setup.

RAM 1500 Mods That Actually Make A Difference

Stock RAM 1500s are good, but with the right mods they're next level. Chassis bracing, a long range tank, camera integration, a GVM upgrade, load rated wheels and tyres, a proper exhaust and smarter storage - this Ram is stronger, tougher, and more capable of towing or touring than it ever was from the factory.
