Whether you’re towing, touring, or just keen for better weekend adventures - these are the big-picture decisions that shape your build.


1. What will I actually use this 4x4 for?


Are doing a lap around Australia, off-roading with mates, towing a van with the family? Plenty of people choose a 4WD based on looks or hype, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right tool for the job. A coil-converted 79 might be the dream rig for some serious wheeling…but it’s overkill if you’re just doing weekend beach trips and school runs.


Your vehicle setup should reflect your actual lifestyle. Consider your real-world needs first, and let the accessories follow.

2. Am I planning short weekend trips, or bigger adventures like Cape York, or the Simpson?


Where you want to go determines everything - barwork, GVM requirements, storage, recovery gear, and comms. If you’re heading remote, reliability and self-sufficiency matter more than aesthetics.


There’s no shame in admitting your off-road goals are modest - but if you are planning the big trips, build for them early and build with safety in mind.

3. What’s my real budget - and where am I willing (or unwilling) to compromise?


We get it. Everyone starts with a figure in their head. But when you’re looking at modifying your 4WD, your budget needs to match the level of usability and performance you’re expecting.


Are you towing? Going remote? Carrying the family? That cheap dual battery might look appealing, but what does it cost if it fails halfway into a trip? Think value, not just price - and don’t be afraid to stage your build.

4. How much experience do I have driving or modifying 4WDs?


Are you brand new to 4WDing? Or have you been around the block?


New off-roaders benefit from starting with the essentials: recovery points, comms, tyre pressure tools, and suspension that suits your load. Experienced drivers might need to fine-tune their 4x4 for weight distribution, off-grid living, or specific driving conditions.


Being honest about your level of experience will help you make smarter, safer upgrade choices.

5. Do I want to build it in stages…or all at once?


There’s no wrong answer here - but knowing which approach you want helps massively.


If you’re going all-in, your suspension, canopy, barwork, and 12V system should be planned to work together from the start. If you’re building in stages, prioritise the more expensive or functional upgrades first, so you can enjoy your 4WD in between building it.
