THE REAL PROBLEM
WHY YOUR HILUX NEEDS A GVM UPGRADE
The Hilux is Australia's best-selling ute for a reason — it does everything. But the factory GVM of 3,050kg doesn't leave much room once you start building. Bull bar, tray or canopy, drawers, dual battery, long range tank, and two passengers on board — you're eating through your legal limit before you've packed a single item.
Exceeding your GVM doesn't just affect how the Hilux handles — it can void your insurance, attract fines, and put real strain on a chassis that's already working hard. A certified GVM upgrade increases your legal payload, restores ride height under load, and keeps your Hilux compliant on Queensland roads.

GR SPORT & ROGUE GVM UPGRADE - NOW AVAILABLE
For a long time the Hilux GR Sport and Rogue were locked out of GVM upgrades entirely due to their factory suspension setup. That changed when Superior Engineering released their federally approved kit specifically for these variants.

GCM & TOWING
TOWING AFTER A GVM UPGRADE - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
A GVM upgrade increases your Hilux's payload. It does not increase how much you can tow. Those are two different limits.
Here's how it works. The Hilux has three key numbers:
-
GVM — the maximum your vehicle can legally weigh, fully loaded.
-
GCM — the combined maximum of your vehicle plus whatever you're towing.
-
BTC — the maximum weight of the trailer itself (3,500kg braked on the Hilux).
This tool shows how the weight of your vehicle and trailer combine to reach your GCM limit.
Adjust the sliders to see how close you are to the maximum combined weight when towing.
The catch is GCM. Even at factory GVM, most Hilux owners can't be at full vehicle weight and tow 3,500kg at the same time — the GCM limit gets hit first. A GVM upgrade gives you more room to carry gear in the vehicle, but if you load the Hilux heavier, you've got less room left in your GCM for the trailer. Add tow ball weight — roughly 10% of whatever you're towing — and that comes directly off your rear axle capacity too.
